Q.I read your article on stripping powder coat paint and it was very informative. However, do you have a recommended way to strip magnesium in a timely manner that will not smear the metal? Abrasive media such as plastic or glass will require a chemical etch according to our overhaul documents and I would like to avoid that. Any information would be helpful. S.B.
A. Unfortunately, using the milder blast medias will not totally remove all surface contaminants. Your repair procedure is correct by recommending an etchant following the surface blast. The etching chemical will remove inorganic soils (oxides) and also passivate the surface. Both of these are required to achieve a good surface bond with the powder coating and will improve corrosion resistance.
